Hua Mulan

Has anyone tried watching Mulan? I had, yes several times ─ actors on stage and cartoons in DVD. The unveiling of 5th Spring Film Festival heightened my interest to watching sub-titled Chinese movies again, to which I apparently had no chance doing last year when I was still attending classes at Confucius Institute.

Opposite to a serene, less complicated storyline played by the characters in Repertory Philippines and that of the colorful lady cartoon singing the “Reflection” with Lea Salonga’s voice, the film revealed blood-spattered history of ancient Chinese’s conquest fought end-to-end by Hua Mulan. Surrendering beauty and peace at home, she bested countless assailants in pursuit of protecting her homeland. In dismissing the airs of womanhood, she victoriously saved her father and countrymen from harm ─ all of them even at the expense of her own happiness. Eying for success in every battle, she found herself falling in love with a co-army who in the end had chosen to be engaged to the rival tribe’s princess to redeem peace in their land.

“Never bring emotions in the battlefield.” That’s how Mulan’s life goes: a woman’s standpoint to give up everything to cherish the treasures of a hard-fought battle ─ love and sacrifice.

@Beany: The story in the cartoons is very very different. No ost, no Mushu (dragon), all but conquering the enemies and fighting against true feelings for each other. But it absolutely was a hit to all viewers that night!

@Sie: Yes, bravery that wrote history over Northern Wei Dynasty in China.

***Show me the big muscles, Bean, so I can ask Gracey to direct the needles there... won't be so frightening, accountants are swift!*** Hahaha

i watched both the disney version and this one. though they have same basic plot, you can obviously notice the difference in their attacks.

actually, i have two reasons why i watched this movie. 1. see how it adapted in live action from the land where the story came from (china).
2. I'm familiar with Vicki Zhao works (Shaolin Soccer and So Close)

I'm not completely move unlike in Crouching Tiger. but i think Vicki had amazing work here. it's physically and emotionally demanding role.

@Hoshi: Zhao gave justice to Mulan's character in the story. ;') It's good to hear you watched it too.
