Summer Chronicles: Conquering Mt. Pundaquit

Having survived two asthma attacks even before midway to the summit, Mt. Pundaquit gave me the most painful climbing experience by far but the adventure that was so worth every sweat drop upon reaching the crest. The beauty from above left me teary-eyed, seriously! I felt so thankful that we have this kind of treasures in our land. We're extra grateful to God for the safe assault and descent towards the beautiful coves of Anawangin and Nagsasa.

After some significant time of not wanting to go there, I was given all the reason to totally change my perspective. Despite an utterly challenging trail towards the summit, the Lord filled the place with picturesqueness and had me surrounded with my siblings-in-eternity.

When I say, challenging, I mean: soaking up the sun for the next three hours, braving the tall and sharp grasses during the trail, towing ourselves up towards the sharp rocky slopes, hydrating our bodies with the last drop of water left after starting the descent, surviving asthma attacks at the trail, and cheering on one another when someone felt like just going back to the jump off point.

There were no much trees in the area – had there been a few, they got no enough branches to give us shelter, and because we started the trek quite late already, the sun was expected to be one of our hardest hurdle. At one point, I remembered what some of my hiker-friends told me prior to joining this event – actually, it’s more of how they wanted me not to take up the challenge. And none from what I was advised about this hike was untrue. Despite the discouragement though, I refused to gulp back any kind of regret especially when we got the complete foretaste of the beautiful sight of the two adjacent coves of Anawangin and Nagsasa. In fact, I would have regretted it more if I didn't go.

Accounting

Accounting is not only about those sleepless nights, never-ending reviews, brain-draining examinations, thick books to read, or skipped trips. It is also about having a goal, a direction, a dream that is worth fighting for, which motivates you to stay in spite of all the sacrifices along the way.

It does not always focus on how you balance your debits and credits, but also on how you balance your time and priorities. Accounting is not only about how hard it is today, but about how rewarding it will be in the future.

Now if you are gonna ask me how I define accounting, I don't think I can give the perfect definition. All I know is that accounting is something that puts a smile on my face every time I wake up. It is something that makes me a better person, it makes me want to achieve more, it makes me want to learn more.

Accounting is like riding a roller coaster. Some people think that it is scary and many people avoid riding on it because of the fear of falling down. Riding a roller coaster can be terrifying, it can be fun, it can be difficult. But after the ride, the terror or the difficulty that you felt will be replaced with the pride of accomplishing something unusual. And it will be something which you will remember for quite a long time. Yes, just like in accounting.

should I try?

Like every child, I once thought of becoming a teacher someday. But it didn't come true. Instead I became a writer. An accountant too. But there are writers who teach and many accountants do teach.

Should I try? :)

what real fun run is to me

The “fun” in running marathon doesn’t go just with the kilometers that one aims to finish. For someone like me who has joined quite a number of office-sponsored fun run, the real fun is actually on how I do the race and here’s why:

  • By history, I always bear the record of being at the bottom five to reach the finish line.
  • I hate sweating so I stop from time to time to retouch and get my face some press powder break.
  • I find talking helpful because it diverts my mind and relaxes me but it burns some twenty to thirty minutes of the running time.
  • Picture taking boosts my energy so I stop from one sign board to another just to take photo of myself and with friends.

Running is a good exercise as much as swimming or cycling is. All these four defined what real fun run is to me. Pain after pleasure that is.

we are family

“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.

The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives.

It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.”

We are family and a family means no one gets left behind.

plunging into the abyss

The project that I need to finish before mid of this month is honestly suffocating! When you have it all laid out and still the result seemed to appear so vague, I couldn’t help but think of something that will at least break the toughest ice.

While most of the people who come here home in on climbing the majestic heights of Mt. Apo, my friends and I came to a unified idea of [skin diving] in the south. I can see everywhere a line of mountaineers wanting to explore the sulfuric trail above. I really admire them and do wish that one day I too can make it at the summit.

Work is what brought me to this place but I am most thankful to have this amazing chance over the weekend to take a plunge into the abyss of the Pacific Ocean.

No one among us has gills to use to stay long in the deep. I have my scales though which perhaps pushed me to bathe into the sea! What we have on hand were snorkeling masks and fins, aqua shoes, underwater camera, rash guards and a full tank of courage!

The giant cliff of about 90 feet deep divides this amazing body of water into two compartments - one leading to the sea and the other to a restricted cave. Dancing along with the fishes was an explainable experience. So accommodating of them, I remember brushing gracefully a few off my face because they're already blocking our way.

We've got plenty of marine treasures in the Philippines. It took us a day and a lifetime to find the place, but it's all worth the long travel. The day is nearly expiring but up to this time, I can feel the fish tails and lovely bubbles we had under the sea.

So real a kingdom when nature spins magic into the deep!

strangers for only a minute

Knowing barely a couple of travelers in the group, it bothered me at the start. I didn’t want to leave any unpleasant impression if I speak too much or too less at first meeting – it made it me a bit uncomfortable, honestly. But hey, just as when coffee is mixed with creamer, the days following with them along became a pleasurable experience.
Photo taken from here
Tito Jimmy & Tita Eve inspired me. As I looked at them from afar, while both valiantly faced the deep and took photos of every inspiring corner in this serene place, I closed my eyes and hoped. Two pairs of itchy feet can make perfect adventure. I dreamed (somehow) to grow old celebrating life outdoors with someone who loves what I love, someone who can inspire me to do the impossible.

I have not met a man who uses different nail cutter for finger and toenails; not until this day. Sir Jo is a carefree adventurer. His entire package tells people that he wants to travel around and stay close to nature. In spending a few days with him, I craved to learn surfing and drooled over the peaks that I haven’t reached yet; I dreamed to see myself fearlessly dancing with the fishes and face unfeminine challenges without much complain (like riding a step-through motorcycle). I want to become as lighthearted as adventurers like him do. I want to become skilled at not bringing work while on vacation.

I thought I was wacky enough. When I met Kit (that’s how they call her despite her name being spelled as Keith), that belief was broken. She’s a hundred fold funnier! Tell her a one-line sentence and she’ll spice it up with a childlike laughter. Not all jokes are funny but she can turn the table and make the conversation a whole lot comical. It’s so nice to be happy but it’s nicer to have met Kit!

Five days – short but so worth looking back on with fondness. I met new faces; strangers for a minute turned family in no time. I miss you guys!

little lanel's work of art

While waiting patiently for the sluggish internet connection, my two-year old niece grabbed my netbook and told me, “Tita, let’s make colors!” That’s how she calls an app with pictures which will only come alive when you colour them.

I did click the cursor but it was her who picked the colors for the drawing:

Lanel: Will the croc eat the sun? It will burn, oh no!

Lanel: Oh baby brod brod! Fly high in the sky!

Lanel: Red apple with rainbow worms? YUCK!

Lanel: Let us color fast! The sharks are coming, quick!

Isn't it cool to be kids again, do some awesome art and give animated comments after?!!

bowling makes me happy

Days unfold so fast. It’s been a year after we last joined the corporate bowling tournament at MOA. I could hardly remember my score that time but I am sure it’s not too far from what I got in the recent bowling game we held at Robinsons Place Manila.

I do bowl and love the game so much.

With some of my games giving out no less than 120 points, I disappointed many during the last tournament – I got a very bad score! Perhaps it matters really when you’re being surrounded by a big crowd and when you know that people expect you to be excellent. That mere thought brings butterflies in your stomach and pulls the littlest confidence you have for yourself. Nevertheless, it’s a game and you can’t call it one when the joy of doing it is inexistent anymore so I shifted my mindset instantly. Instead of frowning over my weeping scores on the board, I pasted a smile on my face each time I knock the pins down. I raised high five to team members who also do excellent tries that night while munching a stick of hotdog in one corner. My team didn’t win and even worse, we ranked last! I will say it again, it’s just a game and we have all the time to practice and make the succeeding tries perfect.

A week after, I found myself at the bowling alley again
with some friends in the church.

I’m no sporty type but with this game, I could spend hours at the mall in pursuit of mastering the perfect strike. I love bowling a lot, so much that I even thought of buying my own bowling ball like those professional players I meet on special tournaments. Well, it’s not yet late for me and it’s a cool idea. Why not? :)

Pan de Amerikana: A treasure in Marikina

Before all these crazy busy days was the fun time at this place of giant chessboard.

I grew up in Antipolo so I supposed to be aware about the wonderful nearby places. Only when we lost out of places to visit that we were able to discover Pan de Amerikana in Marikina. It’s a perfect place to dine in and take a thousand photos of yourself.

::: three-piece checkmates :::

We were expecting that a number of us would come actually but just like any ordinary plans, some have declined joining right on the scheduled day. So you can only see three of us in pictures ─ Daisy, Justin and I.

I am planning to bring my family here next time and that will be soon!

Taste of Bliss: Our Ace Water Spa Experience

“With no much word to describe the soothing bliss I experienced while soaking myself on the bubble-filled tubs, the week of another taxing duties at work seemed to appear magically manageable. Why? Perhaps it’s what they call as starting the week right by relaxing exactly on the day when you don’t have time to do it!”

Those were my words way back in May 2011 when I first experienced the calming beauty that Ace Water Spa in Quezon City has given us. A year after — just last weekend actually — I was blessed to again spend the day in hydrotheraphy at Ace Water Spa, this time in Pasig branch. It’s way more special now because the girls, my two adorable friends, booked a reservation at a nearby hotel so we could spend the whole night chatting and eating and playing like carefree career women.

By admission, I am willing to substitute full body massage with this water therapy. Not only that my friends enjoyed our day together, it was a fulfillment of a long-time dream to get a break from work. Each bubble kneading my arm, back and leg, although gave some itching sensation after every session, satisfied my craving to loosen up the stress covering my body from head to foot! The plan was initially to treat Nica on her birthday in September but since she was away for quite a while, the schedule was moved to date very near to my birthday. So our girls’ day out served a double celebration, mine and Nica’s. We were all first timers in this branch and choosing this place to spend some quiet time together was a great, great idea. I saw the girls in bathers! History hardly ever recorded seeing them worn revealing clothes, so this day was epic! (Hahaha) It took several convincements before Nica came out from the shower area. I had to beg, make drama like I was crazily freezing so we need to rush to the pool area before she came out from her shell and walk with pride out from the ladies locker room.

I had several tries at the lap pool that pulled so much of my energy even before the four-hour allotted time to stay at the spa was over. I was starving already and asked the girls to check out and have dinner. Although deep inside I was sure they would have wanted to stay longer, still they granted my stomach’s wish to eat. But well I didn’t put them down — I showed how hungry I was then by consuming almost 3 cups of rice at Tokyo Tokyo! The two were relaxing totally at the spa and I was busy reaching the edge of the pool back and forth and so I burned the most calories, did I not? (Hahaha)

At the hotel, we barely exchanged words. Well, Des shared a bit of her stories and Nica too, but few minutes after, everyone was defenselessly dozed off. It was a dream-come-true day for the three of us. we happily shared this event to each other as a celebration of an awesome friendship back to the old days and beyond.

What to wear on Marlboro world?

Off to Marlboro world in December!
So they just announced the year-end party theme – it’s Wild, Wild West. This will be my third time to attend to this major office event. The previous parties were themed Jazz Up You Jeans in 2010 and KPOP Invasion in 2011. Although I don’t have much, or rather have really no contribution in the preps of this annual occasion, it excites me still to look forward to the coming days because it sure will keep me and everyone busy finding the best costume to showcase at the facade of the country’s most prestigious hotel, The Peninsula Manila. So how’s that? (Hahaha)

For days, I am contemplating again what to wear in December.

Should it be something like this?

You guys help me, please! :)

when the "leaves" fall off

This is what I am very particular about in every employment ─ LEAVES.

As I look at my leave bank, I so wonder why some of my colleagues still have more than 10 vacation leaves and a very small portion of used sick leaves while mine is badly shrinking to zero balance. :)) Hahaha

Is this the prize for having a pair of itchy feet?

Going Korean (again): A Barefoot Dream

People dream dreams and we seem not fear anything when we are really persuaded to reach them. This spirit I saw in Coach Kim Sin-hwan of the Korean film, A Barefoot Dream.

With my two Korean fanatic friends
As a rule and by experience, we don’t get to expect too much of the things given for free. We initially perceive them to be substandard and not worth any meager cost. After reading some online ads of this free Korean film marathon, I happily spread the news to my friends. Everyone knows, I’m not a fan (remember I’m Chinese by heart) of anything about Koreans but since it’s free, trying the show won’t be a bad idea.

Oh Min and Ning Li: Breed of Chinese and Korean by heart

We came late, so late we had no better choice but to squat like a frog on the floor. Good that we found a space to crouch near the fire exit side of the cinema where it’s less uncomfortable and the big screen was still easy to view.

The story took place in East Timor where a soccer team of barefoot players once dreamed of playing and winning a real competition. Coach Kim gave away soccer cleats, which these kids should pay in gradual terms. Due to limited resources, no one made it to shell out what was paid for each pair of shoes.  Each boy tried, in all fairness, to execute his best in pursuit of sourcing out money. Some sold goods, some solicited funds, some broke their “jar” banks. With much compassion and big hopes for these children’s soccer career, all he wanted in return was for his team to strive more and achieve an international exhibition soccer tournament in Hiroshima. He had a hardworking team, real dreamers eyeing for success in each local competition they engaged into. Despite all these, their resources fall short of sending them to Japan ─ adding some untoward situation of Kim needing to go back to Korea for some social-political reason.
.
Coach Kim reminisced his words, “I have always dreamed but never finished it,
now I brought the team, these barefoot children to the finish line, successfully.”

Kids do fight and the story didn’t miss to describe the reality behind being in a team. Montavio and Ramos never had harmonious encounter. They hated each other’s floor techniques and even brought the dilemma to their game in Japan. Yes, these children and Coach Kim made it to reach their Hiroshima dream through and by the kind support of the Timor local and foreign government associates, from plane tickets to full board accommodation. This boy, Tua, whom I first thought to be eliminated because of shortness in height, did the magic kick, which led the team to winning over their Japanese opponents. The match wasn’t a smooth one. Coming from a tropical country, the cold weather in Japan was their biggest challenge. The players were seen rubbing their arms in chill.

East Timor locals were only able to catch up on the live game through radio transmitter. Imagine the challenge of just listening and painting the scenario in their imagination! Everyone jumped in glee after announcing the team’s success. The magic kick, Tua's kick hit the score and made them bring home the bacon.

It was all worth it basking on the floor at the corner of the cinema for nearly two hours.

The film was a simple story with comprehensive lessons in life to share to everyone. We all relearned the spirit of teamwork and working our every dream out to make success happen. Of course it won’t be possible without God’s final touch in every circumstance. We pray for our plan, plan our work and work our plan.

welcoming July

I welcomed July running. Yes, this asthmatic active sports enthusiast (that’s me!) joined another marathon sponsored by our office. It’s free anyway, so why not grab the chance to exercise? Unlike last year under Unilab RunRio Trilogy Leg 2 (Family) Run to which I was with my sister Yulab, this time it’s registered under Robinsons Supermarket Fit and Fun Wellness Buddy Run where Karen and I were buddies.

2011 Unilab RunRio Trilogy Leg 2 ─ with Yulab, Mao, Anna and I

People knew that despite my respiratory impairment, still I climb mountains. My lungs are tried and tested. I am very much aware of how far I can go and how slow I should move when I do exhausting activities like hiking, cycling and swimming ─ and I must tell, I am not good at all at running. I suffer from shortness of breath frequently that makes me feel like collapsing any time so I don’t get to force myself in doing this as normal as others do. Since I didn’t do any marathon after last year, joining the run last weekend without enough preparations was a mixture of fun and disaster.

Fun because it’s another office privilege to grab and enjoy with my real friend, Karen along with a number of running buddies. We were early birds hopeful for our “worms” that day. It’s not anymore our desire to be at the top list considering a crowd of participants but the grocery items awaiting the finishers were our real drivers. I loved, too, the photo shoots! The gazillion shots taken by photographers I didn’t know (and I didn’t care at all, I just smiled when I saw them taking pictures) were the extra juicers. In my mind I was crazily seeing a hundred photos posted in Facebook!

We ran, we walked, we posed and smiled, we thirsted, we jogged.
We laughed, we rested, and soon enough, we finished.

And the twist... it was a disaster because I had to endure an unexplainable body and muscle pain days after the event. I was proud to go back home from the church right after the run without complaining anything in my body, until the following morning… I was nearly crawling off to the toilet for a shower. The pain in my legs was excruciating and worse when I take stairs going down. Karen and I were laughing to death when we realized that we had to take the stairs on the underpass. We went on the opposite side and held on each railing while going down. If the normal time to walk down the underpass is three minutes, maybe it took us four times slower! Upon writing this post, I honestly can still feel the discomfort but is now more manageable.

I loved the experience, though. The fact that each has finished the race, it’s an achievement in itself. Another thing to be proud of when you’re not an inborn healthy person. Oh, by the way, I thank God that it didn’t rain! :)

Ilocos Chronicles: Bangui Windmills

Have you ever imagined how big an aircraft propeller is?
It must be something like this…

This is actually the one thing in my mind (after Vigan) when I hear of Ilocos.

I was dying to see these big windmills in Bangui seashore when the plans to go up north were first brought up. Everyone was peeping through the car window just to see those wind turbines. The moment our van dropped us off, fascinating scenery welcomed us. One…two…three… there were actually twenty of them lined up at the shore serving two purposes ─ being a real source of electric energy to Ilocos Norte and giving each tourist a satisfying holiday.

One is unable to describe the wonder of the place in words unless he gets to see it with his own eyes.

We have gone crazy taking gazillion of photos of ourselves. Name it all: jump, candid and casual shots – we’re all very cooperative! With each pole standing 23-storey-high and each blade measuring 41 meters wide and it’s body requiring more than ten thin people to embrace each pole, all we could utter was a big WOW.

We’re just a small number of WOWtrippers but I tell you, we owned the place that very day! It will be more fun if you try going there sometime. :)

Free Eyewear: The Drama Queen Giveaway Promo

Four eyes make you look genius, that’s how people perceive it. In reality and by experience, it’s partly true ─ I can’t recall how many times I have heard family friends and relatives telling my parents how intelligent their children (my two sisters and I) must be simply because we all wear eyeglasses.

I was forced to have mine during my review class for the board exams. Every shift was like a hundred students so just imagine how far I was seated from the class podium. Students fear of staying on the front row so that explained why I was there in the middle. Studying numbers was quite painful but having bad eyesight was worse! I was unwilling to have one at first because I didn’t want to look older than my age that time but I was not given a better option. My eyes get easily sore with contact lenses and so wearing eyeglasses was my last and only resort.

Me and my eyeglasses through the years.

Because I am very particular with my belongings, I see to it that they are well kept. My things would depreciate naturally over the years. I have had barely four pairs of eyeglasses since after I started using it and the current pair just turned two years last May.

Now that I’m getting older, it seems that wearing classy pair of glasses would help in keeping you in the trend. I am very excited about the FIRMOO giveaway announced by Dr. Crickette Inserto-Lazaro. I once won a contest sponsored by NIVEA through a similar blogger promo of The Drama Queen Can Tell Stories.

Following friendly procedures posted on her page ─ click HERE, two winners can win pair of eyeglasses/sunglasses (each) from their catalog (free shipping to anywhere).

So what are you waiting for? Come and join the fun, hope and win like I want! :)

Bataan Chronicles: ROHQ Teambuilding 2012

It was somewhat discouraging to know that four of us in the committee are from same group, Violet (Matibay Team). What I was worried about was being unable to participate in the majority of the teambuilding since I form part of the committee. Our head events coordinator, the HRD manager herself, made it clear to give us chances to play and enjoy the said activity in between tasks. It was only a matter of strategy that we were able to act as though we weren’t busy at the backstage, planning and deciding for the event.

We started planning for our share to the group during our free time while swimming. Mark has in mind his cheering piece and we hummed together to familiarize the melody. After which we conceptualized what to do on the fellowship night where the guys thought of “olympic theme” with a variety of sports entries ─ bowling, equestrian, Viking, taekwondo, gymnastics and boxing to feature Manny Pacquaio and Mommy Dionisia as a funny twist to win the audience attention. Everyone was madly laughing for our plans except for Henry who was very unfortunate to be the only Orange team member in the group. We even accused him, in jest, that all our plans will be leaked to his team so we needed to be so much discreet when he’s around. Hahaha!!!

Friday came and we were very excited to meet everyone. On board the two buses from Manila arrived the entire ROHQ family divided into four teams – Fuchsia, Orange, Blue and Violet. After a very brief orientation, the competition started.

Here’s the flow of the activities we prepared for them:

  • Doctor Quack Quack won by Orange Team
  • Tug of War won by Fuchsia Team
  • Relay (Run, Swim, Hurdles, Sack Race, Kayak, Palayok) won by Orange Team
  • Women’s Basketball won by Fuschia Team
  • Men’s Beach Volleyball won by Violet Team
Our team leader motivated us by his slogan ─ We’re Violet. We’re Victors. We’re winners. Nevertheless, we never really got to the top from all these physical activities except for volleyball. The boys were all great players! Instead, we bagged first place at the early morning puzzle solving which took place in Manila before their travel. We topped at the cheering competition too and raking first at the fellowship night concluded our win. The team was like claiming a million worth reward while getting our pack of goods on stage. Such tight competition rendered everyone desirous of victory and fun. We did had fun and I’m sure the other teams had, too.

I left Bataan toasted! Mister sun burned my skin after two days of staying at the resort. Nevertheless, what we meant for this annual event came into existence – we had fun, we gained friends, we built a team.

Bataan Chronicles: Committee (again!)

work and play with Richmond, Mark, Anne and Henry

No matter how I tried to flee from all those boring admin side of company activities, the HRD had always wanted me to be part of the committee. And because the people who grab you are not just ordinary officers, there’s really no room for a NO answer.

Four committee members and I headed to Montemar Beach Club at Bataan a day earlier than the teambuilding schedule. I was very hesitant to join the advance party at first thinking that I would be left out from these people outside my circle of friends, but I proved myself wrong – they were as nice as what I wanted my travel companions to be like.

After a long ride from Manila and after roaming around the entire hacienda to plant hurdles and flags, we embraced our privilege as committee members. The pool was like a perfect oasis after a very tiring day so we had a long night swimming escapade. We got drenched and took gazillion photos of our craziness!

It wasn’t a long bonding time but each passing hour was moment of fun and friendship built among five different people with one same mission to make a worthwhile teambuilding. And proudly I would say that we did it all well!

Night of Mardigras

Only rare moments allow us girls to dress like a princess and walk the red carpet like real VIPs, and this night was reserved for that glamorous affair. It’s the company’s 24th Anniversary Conference and I am pleased to be part of the event held at Makati Shangri-La Hotel with today’s theme Night of Mardigras.

Photoshoot with some colleagues, and that's me!

People in the department were actually comfortable with the theme itself after having a similar mask party back in December. The one thing that kept me occupied from the time announcements were made was the what-to-wear thoughts considering I was with Brazilian group. The two others were Indians and Africans, by the way. I was very lazy to stride every corner of the malls again to get the dress that will fit the occasion so I planned ─ and it did materialize nicely – to recycle the gown I used two years back when I hosted a year-end gathering too, my black Tinkerbelle–inspired semi-balloon black and silver evening dress.

I was very reluctant to put the gown on again. Thoughts like it might not fit my size now and I look sillier today than the first time I wore it scared me. In front of the mirror, as I see my restructured self ─ wearing a bump on my crystal pinned hairdo, showing off my painted cheekbones and reddish lips, and being dressed in this made-to-order apparel – I nearly failed to recognize that it was actually me!

I don’t know how to humbly appreciate what I have become that night, but I just loved seeing myself then. So ladylike, simple but perfectly elegant. Left and right I heard some appreciation too from my colleagues and it all felt overwhelming. Their kind commendation made me carry my garb gracefully.

By order of Mardigras presentation: Africans - 3rd place, Brazilians - 2nd place, Indians - Grand Winner.

It was a night of art too. With the three countries participating in the event, the rest of the crowd gave justice to the Mardigras theme. Brazilians, my group mates, were highly captivating! Dressed in a combination of red, neon green and pink colors, their stage presence was spectacular. The Indian boys and girls, on the other hand, took us to the alluring world of Hindus while the Africans brought the jungle to the city with the natives dancing to an epic ritual song. The presentation in itself was stunning. I could say that it was a very successful event solely from observing our international bosses applauding for the production numbers rendered. We Filipinos are as talented as we are in office when asked to perform on stage.

Although our team ranked after the ultimate winners, the Indians, the night gave me the entertainment I expected. It was fun meeting the people I only know by name in our email communications. And it was pretty satisfying be part of celebrating the company’s another year in the business.
