The Rascal's Big Hero

So the writer was busy all throughout the last quarter of this year mainly because of my duties at work and because of the biggest blessing God sent me – my heart’s big hero. With all the effort put into making the event possible, I am most grateful to the Lord for sewing our yesterdays and bringing us to where we are at this point, and for the support and warm accommodation of our friends and families when we needed them the most.

Sometime in the past I remember giving up on ever entering a relationship again. I keenly sought for God’s wisdom so I can better understand the circumstances I’d have to face alone in the future, strong will so I can endure loneliness and low self-esteem attacks, and grace so I can magnify the Lord in my life as a set-apart woman. True enough, I never dated anyone for years. I didn’t play hard-to-get either. I was tough enough to just say no at once when situations called for it. And those were years when I can gladly say I was in my closest fellowship with God. He filled the emptiness in my heart with that passion to just serve Him, know more about Him, love Him and nothing else matters. That was when I can clearly identify what being content in life means.

Once upon a time, the big rascal met her big hero.
Just as when I felt to be at the peak of my closeness with my Saviour, there came someone who brought my vulnerability back to its place – well at least in a better way this time. It scared me at the beginning but God comforted me and have this person pray hand in hand with me right from the start.

The years I spent alone, just keeping my focus to the Lord equipped me to be wiser today, to be more prayerful, to be more dependent on God’s word. Because the call to wait will never be easy, we both set our hearts into trusting God for our future.

To date, I am certain that our relationship makes us more thankful and closer to God and that we can't wait for what He has in store for us in the year, or years, to come.

There is more to trusting God than just throwing things away. Chances are we look around to that exact place were we trashed them off and give up and blame God for another heartache. Trusting means letting it go and have Him do the plan as He pleases and that’s never dependent on how I will feel or react. So together, we move onto the next chapter of our relationship – willingly offering to God the pen to write our love story.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Another Kind of Heartache

When you left the first time, my happiness for your being free from emotional pain made it easy to move on. There was only a tiny piece of sadness hanging around whenever I see your empty seat at work. Although it was hard to find regular time in seeing each other, you made it feel like there’s not much difference in your absence because you know exactly how to be a real friend to me. Now that you’ll be crossing another phase of life in a very distant territory, I think it’ll remind me of getting another kind of heartache! On the very last minute we talked, I shed the first teardrop for separation anxiety. I'll miss you big time!

So tonight I’m tossing a coin at an invisible wishing well, close my eyes in prayer and say, “I’ll see you in California!”

Miles and Time

Habakkuk 2:3
For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it hastens toward the goal, and it will not fail... though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay.

Standing between a great distance and some folds of time do bring special challenges and require special understanding and wisdom. It's not really difficult but neither very easy to connect in the cracks of life, debrief after all the action of the day is done, try to make the headlines — exciting and discouraging — feel real for someone on the other line, but as much as each one seems to care about the other, they both aren’t there in the same place and time. But the partial integration into their lives is undeniably helpful for imagining what the complete integration might be like.

Time divides years into months, months into days, days into hours, hours into minutes and minutes into seconds and the huge distance into just tiny steps in a wink of an eye. The miles and time that stand between them is but a thin line in the eyes of the God who stands in front. So what is 85 days of a little wait to soon behold an unutterable joy that their hands once clasped in silent prayer?

distantly close you and I

There are moments when I struggle not to write about this and pretend to be emotionally sedated for a while. But when you belong to the minority with so vague a chance to grow and survive, faith suddenly blossom and blessings come in big surprise.

So the only thing that matters for the distantly close you and I, is the wisdom in trusting our God.

gifts for your future spouse today

I chanced upon a goodread today and found it a lot encouraging to share.

One of the hardest parts of waiting for marriage is the terrible feeling there is nothing we can do. Admittedly, there are always things we can do to increase our chances of meeting Mr. or Mrs. Right, but there certainly is no full-proof formula. You can follow all the advice on Boundless and still not feel one step closer to finding marriage. You can feel helpless.

While the waiting game can feel paralyzing, there are gifts you can give your future spouse right now. There are things you can do today that will be sweet gifts to your future spouse when the timing is right.

1. Make wise financial decisions.

This is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s a gift to learn how to follow a budget, to spend less than you make, to save for the future, to avoid debt, to make wise purchases, and to plan for the future. Good stewardship now will be a good gift to your future spouse.

2. Work hard each and every day.

It is a gift to our future spouses to learn how to work hard. As we work to improve our skills and avoid the temptation to be lazy, we give our future spouses the sweet confidence that we are both willing and able to provide for their future. Whether your work is inside or outside the home, learn to work diligently.

3. Relentlessly fight for purity.

Every effort we take to walk in purity is a sweet gift to our future spouse. When we fight to keep our hearts and minds pure, avoid lustful entertainment, set wise physical boundaries in each and every relationship, establish healthy accountability and repent quickly when we fail, it’s as though we are writing our future spouse a million-dollar check.

4. Carefully steward your health.

It can be a real struggle to take care of ourselves as singles. Fast food can become a fast habit. Exercise does not always feel like its own reward. But we must remember our future spouses will appreciate the strides we take to be healthy. Let your healthy choices be a very tangible gift to your future spouse.

5. Sharpen your mind.

One of the best gifts we can give our future spouses is a sharp mind. Become an expert in things that interest you. Ask interesting questions of life and seek solid answers. Learn to appreciate and enjoy great stories and great art. Become a master conversationalist. Let the Word of God be a place of regular training and instruction.

6. Write them a letter.

Take some time and write your future spouse a letter. Tell them about this moment in your life. Tell them about the things you are learning and speak from the heart. Share your hopes and dreams for the future and ways God is currently blessing you.

7. Cultivate community.

Build strong, lasting friendships. Learn to encourage, give, serve, and spend time with your friends. Learn to forgive people when you’ve been hurt. Learn to love when it’s tough to love. See your close friendships as a training ground for future marriage.

8. Pray for them.

This might be the most important advice on the list. Pray for your future spouse. Pray for their sanctification. Pray for their protection from the evil one. Pray they would walk in grace. Pray the precious promises of Christ over their lives. Pray over your future dating relationship, engagement and marriage. Turn your favorite Bible verses into prayers for your future spouse. Do this often. Make this a regular discipline. Never stop praying for your future spouse.

What other gifts are you giving your future spouse?

substance of prayer

Prayer is a channel of comfort for me. Its relieving power in the midst of trouble is forthright amazing. If there is something I am really thankful about after God saved me, it’s having this unlimited privilege to talk to Him just like how a child talks to his father and knowing in my heart that He listens. And maybe, I have had all those kinds of prayer requests which I was actually unable to categorize as to substance until this morning.

I encountered a child who suffered from meningitis not too long ago. That illness held him helpless in bed for quite a long time. I wasn't able to visit him at the hospital during his confinement but his name, always being mentioned in prayer requests, became very familiar to me. Today everyone was surprised of his presence in the church. We were told that he wanted to thank the Lord for his recovery, so he came.

Upon seeing him, it dawned on me how massive this boy’s prayer warriors must have been when he was still bedridden, how his parents cried to the Lord for mercy day and night to get their child back to his normal life again. I suddenly began recapping my very first prayer when I woke up and the heaviest prayer I lifted to God by far. And before I even start thinking, my eyes welled up with tears of guilt – guilt for all the self-centered requests I shamelessly uttered and still hoard in my heart. While I spent countless times praying for personal matters like getting a stable job, owning a car, travel around the globe, rub elbows with a godly man worthy to give up my singleness for, there was this boy whose only prayer was to wake up tomorrow. I felt ashamed for the time I was actually treating God more like a genie instead of a Holy King.

In many remarkable situations, I was always tempted to forget that prayer is not primarily about what I can get out of God, but what He purposes to do in and through me for His glory, that my prayers must be based on faith like Jehoshaphat’s in 2 Chronicles 20:5-9, on God’s promises as stated on Jeremiah 33:3 and primarily concern the will of the Lord as what Christ led His disciples to pray. Indeed, how and what I pray for measure my spiritual maturity which directly points to how I allow God to work in every aspect of my life.

It was such a wonderful blessing to meet this kid!

fermata

The day she called doom has come. Caught in great astonishment, inarticulacy consumed her. Total cluelessness on this ordeal rendered her inoperative for sixty vague seconds! After struggling against the moment of disbelief, she could do nothing but breathe loads of air to keep her at least psychologically alive. It took her several minutes to integrate each piece of concern she has in mind.

Beating the challenge passed on to her, she discovered the significance of stealing a big pause in life. It may not be the best option now, but it certainly is the last way out.

on becoming desperate... when you're single

The world had shaped people’s minds to understand singlehood as one unfathomable curse in this life. I was once deceived by this philosophy and still am very much vulnerable to believing its lies.

Sometimes having nobody to care for and set exclusive affection to is just as simply as ABC ─ you completely don’t mind having no one beside to cuddle along when you’re tired and unhappy… until your friends keep marrying year after year, until you’re sitting between love birds in the shuttle bus, until you walk past by a bench occupied by a girl leaning on his boyfriend’s shoulder, and until you see yourself in the mirror, all alone. It does bother more how others react about the situation, laughing at your back, mocking you, playing obnoxious clowns.

It’s such a relief to know that I am God’s child. And I haven’t really explained well my deepest thoughts about not opting to be in a relationship now until I read this wonderful article which I am sharing with you.

If I could sit down with single people one on one and just offer them one piece of advice it would be… Desperation In Dating Always Leads To Destruction!

How do you know you are desperate?
  • You are compromising! (and if you are compromising you KNOW you are doing so!)
  • You are listening to your friends more than you are listening to Jesus.
  • You have placed your value in whether or not he calls and asks you out for a second date (or whether she says yes to a second date!)
  • You view yourself as "damaged goods" and believe that you are not worth very much.
  • You believe the myth that "I am miserable because I am single" and believe that marriage will solve all of your problems.
  • You are pretending to be someone you are not because you fear if you were who you really are the person you are dating would not like you!
  • You are with a person who is leading you away from Jesus, not closer to Him.

Desperate people rarely make good decisions and reality is that some singles reading this may be pursuing a relationship that has warning signs all over it…but instead of paying attention to that you believe that if you push through that eventually the other person will become who you want them to be.

But the book of Proverbs says, "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." (Proverbs 22:3) In other words…if we see danger in something (like maybe our dating relationships) and we pursue them anyway then we are clearly told there is a penalty to pay.

Desperate people hardly ever make great decisions. The worse thing that you could do for your future spouse and children is become desperate and grab on to whomever just happens to be in front of you.

Desperation in dating always leads to destruction. My prayer is that if you are wrestling with this that you would turn your desperation for a date into a desperation to hear the voice of the Lord (Jeremiah 29:13) and allow Him to shape your view of dating and marriage more so than the culture we are living in.

The ONE THING I know about the Lord is that HE IS GOOD…and if HE IS GOOD then so are HIS WAYS! AND…whenever HIS WAYS and my ways are not the same it is I who need to adjust my thinking (Isaiah 55:8) because in doing so there is hope, life and freedom! We should NOT be desperate when there is a God in heaven who wants greater things for us than we could ever imagine!

a storm without a name

Let me take a break from the writing marathon challenge. I agree for not being into blogosphere for over a week because (1) the month-end deadlines are just so pressing and (2) internet connection at home is terrible due to the crazy weather ─ now bringing flash floods to many areas. And wonder why I called it crazy? No sane man want to label it when as for an ordinary civilian like me, if it rains nonstop for consecutive days (and even weeks), then a typhoon, there must be... so the crazy downpour is logically a storm without a name.

Back in 2009, there was this tropical storm named ONDOY.

The whole metro and nearby provinces submerged in flood, hour after hour as the rain continued to drench the land. It happened on a weekend so I was very thankful to be home that time. Dad and my sister (who was still single that time) were separately stranded in pursuit to still come home. We live in a high place that typically doesn’t get flooded no matter how heavy the rain gets. Oh well, even then, we forgot to consider the basin areas surrounding us ─ Pasig, Marikina, Cainta, and all other provinces of Rizal. So the battle went on. We solely relied on news updates through our mobile phones because there was mass blackout that time. After braving the rain, flood and the wind, we were very much thankful to welcome our soldiers, Dad and my sister, at home. Although it took them more than twice the normal travel time from office to home, our gratefulness to have them back, safe and sound, was truly beyond measure.

They both shared their stories about how the flooded places around looked like and soon after the electric power was back, we were surprised of the news about the serious casualties ONDOY has brought us. Hundreds died, many were still missing and numberless lost their houses. I couldn’t number too how many have endured the cold night at their rooftops and hours of empty stomach.

Three years after that ONDOY tragedy came another ordeal bringing not just equally severe,
but more serious damage to many.

I wept while watching the live telecast of children and flood victims being rescued from their submerged homes. There were families buried alive in the safest place they knew. Gladly that electric power was alive all throughout the day, but how disheartening it is to know that there were cases of death too due to electric shock in the streets.

I can’t do anything but look above, from where this great and unnamed cloudburst come. As God tamed the sea in Peter’s time, I believe His power can’t be any lesser to calm the angry sky today. Your message is well received, Lord. Please spare your servants from any hurt brought by this tempest.

8/20 Challenge: Carelessness

I am an accountant by profession. Properly accounting others’ wealth or even bankruptcy is the source of my living. Working in the corporate world for nearly a decade now, I must say I am already comfortable with my daily duties. It almost feels like I know everything… until one mishap happened recently.

To be more specific, I work in a shipping management were Captains are little gods. As someone from finance who understands the language of accounting better, it’s my job to maintain accuracy in vessels reports and have everything aligned with what I have in financial books. For many years in the business, I became complacent of my own work believing I was doing everything efficiently. Much to my surprise, I overlooked one single account involving vessel’s purchase of call cards and selling those to crew ─ at a price 50% short of the requisition value. The error has been running for months now and the reconciling items were supposed to be seen very visibly but I just didn’t mind. I was so reluctant because all along I perceived things as very well accounted for. I could have been keener and proactive to have informed our counterpart early on so loss won’t pile up this big in one go. One word, careless!

What big dumb frog I am! And as of writing, I still can’t figure out how to resolve the problem. There are really times when you feel like a plain stupid worker despite all the years of dedicated service in your profession ─ and the best example today is myself.

how about another try?

In the midst of everyone’s excitement about your coming, I find myself in one corner anxiously waiting for that one day. I look beyond the clouds and there formed an adorable face ─ a beautifully created visage, eyes filled with hope and that sweet smile identifying your commitment to Christ and contentment in life. As I behold your presence, there popped questions in my mind:

Am I ready to be in a team again? Has that willingness to submit stood strong over the years without practice? Am I ready to serve better, care deeper and commit more fervently to the person than to myself? Am I willing to give up part of my being independent and include someone in my circle once again? Is the pot of patience still filled with enough reserves? Am I ready to have another try after the so many emotional stress I both had caused and gotten back in return? Am I equipped with proper motive to get this journey started one more time?

I was thinking about your name but ignored it anyway, I shall get to know more about you when it’s time. No matter how far you are from me today, our God is there at both ends sewing up our future together by His blessings and grace. I am just here filled with prayers that you’ll find me waiting faithfully.

Hey, it's MAY!

It has been a week after month of May entered 2012 and over a week too that I wasn’t able to write a thing on my blog. My crazy busy life facing all these month-end accounting chores barred me from posting not even a welcome note for May’s coming. Although I tried the best I could to write what’s on my mind, my responsibilities in the office were just so pressing I couldn’t complete anything!

MAY has left me a whole lot of memories, both good and bad. It was on this month when I broke up from my last relationship. I really thought my world would stop spinning from that time on, but thankfully this is the second MAY to rejoice for such a big relief God has given me. Recovering from shattered emotions is never as easy as some perceive it especially in my case. Although I don’t want to unearth history here, I honestly can say that the pain has gone over time.

This year’s MAY will cause me to break sore as I face an office friend’s farewell to us. We have been surrounded by funny rumors on being too close and some even believed that we’re some kind of a “thing” but we’re really not, believe me! Yes we are no less than colleagues but no more than friends, too. Our strong personalities draw us closer and we find comfort always in discussing our differences when situations call for it. We both love the beach and we enjoy our friendship. But it’s just it. I am not just used to being left by close peers so I planned for an itinerary away from work on his last day ─ I will be northbound again!

Before he leaves, by the way, I will be off to Mount Pinatubo for a minor climb with some church friends. I have personal interest why I am very much anticipating for this event to come. Among those who will join is another special person. We’re friends in Facebook, but not as close “yet” personally. Oh well, after the healing time comes the rehabilitation period. (Hahaha) He’s my apple of the eye lately and have started praying about this thing over to God for nearly a year now. I first prayed to be given chance to be close to him in a getting to know stage and it was gratefully granted. Now, this is another answered prayer. So need I have to say more? All depends to God and His perfect timing. Let’s just wait!

Lastly, MAY is the month for mothers. This requires another interesting post, so you gotta wait! :)

importunity

I have chosen to fill my blog with stories that will inspire my readers and will bring further self-encouragement. The writer that I want people to remember is someone packed with good sense, high moral values and brighter perspectives ─ someone whose genuineness is revealed in the written thoughts.

Life, however, as we know is not always giving us a favorable circumstance. I battle how to be a source of encouragement when I am weak and vulnerable, when I am the one needing a gentle pat on my shoulder, when standing strong seems so big a task to perform, when the going gets tough and painful. I am just an ordinary writer. A human being. Someone so capable of getting hurt like anyone else. And I want to be honest now – I am hurt. There is this unnecessary pain that I battle to cover with my supposed emotionally stable feet. I am diligently searching for immediate comfort. I am, at this time, in need of motivation.

As I lay down at my Saviour’s feet my burden today, I felt the one big hug that I need. He’s the Author of all my writings. Way before I scribble my thoughts, He already knows what tomorrow will bring. He holds the future and His presence in my life comforts me. So grateful that You’re always enough, Lord, for me.

I didn't give it up!

I can’t recall how many times and how many people have encouraged me to try taking the CPA Licensure Exam again. Unlike most of my batch mates, I just tried it once, a year after my graduation. My tolerance to failure is very low and so it really took a while before I was able to pull myself up again after that great fall. Perhaps being perceived as a strong-willed woman and being the eldest among four children, I also expected, in such a very big probability, that I would make it. However, it just didn’t happen ─ the Lord has better plans, I believed then.

Time and again when I see friends’ names posted on broadsheets and published online as new board passers, there comes something from within that bothers me. When I think of passing the exams, I imagine my parents’ fulfilled dreams, my sisters shared victory and the people’s priceless applaud. Such are so worth envisioning!

The years back then were far different from the present. I need to work harder. I have to focus on becoming a more diligent and desirable employee. And if I do not concentrate with my job now, I have no more time in the future when the kitchen and laundry will be the exclusive places I can be seen busy ─ when I already have a husband to serve and children to raise. Some people laugh at me for telling this, but this is how I really see myself. I don’t want to slog all my life in the office without a family of my own to come home to at the end of the day. I want to retire to my bed beside a loving provider surrounded by our little ones. I want to serve my purpose as a woman, and spend my remaining years on earth as full fledged mom.

Dreams. I didn't give up. Maybe God has shifted the steering wheel.

innocent tears of a child

Another friend, mother of a close churchmate, died of fatal heart attack at age 65. We rushed to the funeral right after our Sunday worship service to bring comfort to the bereaved family. The relatives have yet to arrive when we reached the funeral chapel so after a few embraces to console our friends, I stayed outside the room and keenly observed the surroundings.

In the middle of a very quiet atmosphere, we heard a striking conversation among youngsters. The departed’s youngest granddaughter came near her other young cousins who just arrived at the place. I heard countless sobs and barely could understand their talk. It was my Mom who relayed the details to us after we left the funeral service.

Here’s the monologue of this little child:

“Hey, I was told by them that grandmother is no longer going home. She will forever stay in that box and won’t be able to play with us again. You better cry now also!”

A humble smile emerged on my face. No matter how awful losing someone so special is, this child’s very naïve and sincere statement brought joy to my heart. Perhaps that’s how she loves her grandmother. Even if she doesn’t totally understand what death is all about, she cries for the mere thought of missing the person. At a very young age, she’s able to identify with this heartbreaking truth.

Our deepest condolences to the Olaguer family.
Your mom will be painfully missed.

gunshot of the wanderlust moments

The year-end has nailed me to finishing gazillion tasks! I was literally drowning with papers on my desk. So much preoccupied and all, welcoming the wonderful month of February seemed to be a very difficult assignment. Oh well, I have waited enough for this day to come. Aside from Dad’s birthday and my parents’ 30th wedding anniversary, February is the gunshot of the wanderlust moments in 2012. Just before the last quarter of 2011 ended, I already have series of itinerary for the coming year. Yes, these itchy feet will (again) bring me to places!

As others call this the “love month,” I am to describe February as this
─ the gunshot of a grander discovery of Earth’s paradise!

Being a self-proclaimed travel organizer, I was able to arrange a kick off trip to Vietnam for 15pax! The group is actually a combination of colleagues, classmates, friends and my sister, Geah. Although some unseen circumstances had cut our members by two, still “thirteen” is a great number, isn’t it? Our four days and three nights stay at Saigon shall surely bring us another remarkable experience. Not to mention bringing my sister there, I am very much happy to share the privilege of traveling with Geah, who then is compelled to run off one day from her class to accommodate our trip. Still not bad, I surmise!

After which, my post summer and birthday (booked in advance) will be painted with the blueness of beaches from the south – Guimaras and Bohol. I have yet to finalize the itineraries, though. There are many days in between after my first overseas travel this year, anyway so I have time to list it all down. I am generally speechless of how blessed I was in 2011, and this year, I know, has something special in store for me.

meeting Uncle Zandro

After receiving Mom’s text message to visit one relative at the hospital, I didn’t think twice and left early after work to join her and Dad. Clueless of who the person really is, I was amazed to know how God has put things in order for me to meet Uncle Zandro again.

Benign brain tumor was the reason why he was flown to Manila all the way from Cebu. The only hospital that can cater him with the Gamma Knife procedure is here. Upon meeting my parents the other night, he requested to see me for some reasons. His tight embrace welcomed me as I entered his cozy room. It was as if I was hugging someone who missed me for a very long time. True enough, twenty-four years passed by before we were able to see each other again. I paid much attention as he started to remind me of the sweet yesteryears.

Note: Whoever reads this, please join us in praying for him. Thank you!

He was a Bible student then and was required to do a certain case study to which he chose me to be one of his respondents. “We played together and in between breaks, you helped me answer some questionnaires I made,” he recalls. It was a complete success and his promise to see me again after he graduated was long held pending because he was assigned to Cebu. Since then I never heard about him. In fact, I was unable to recognize him at first glance in the hospital. He seemed to be a plain stranger. Nevertheless, his old time stories bridged the gap between today and all those silent years after we last met. I felt honored to find someone who longs for my presence. I hugged him back and shared prayers for his fast recovery.

Indeed, God has a way of putting people in the right place at the right time.

it was almost a perfect wedding

There I saw people in elegant apparel surrounding us. Flowers were everywhere. The food was overflowing. There were wonderful voices serenading the crowd. With no further ado, I would say it was a wedding. I was in that wedding and the most amazing thing was… I was the bride!

Although part of me struggled to convince myself that it all was just a dream, my smiles were priceless. I was stunned by the beauty around me ─ the colorful gowns, braided hair, glowing make ups, numberless gifts and the fragrance spilled out in the entire place. It was a complete picture of what I really wanted on my wedding day, except for one thing: I was there to marry a man I do not love.

As much as I could, I tried to sneak to his face and even wanted to memorize it for my own reference when I wake up. However, I failed. I just knew and was completely aware that our hearts cry for freedom while everyone around us was seemingly rejoicing. There pierced misery as he held my shaky hand to give me the ring. No tears though, I was sure he was crying inside like me. And just before the minister proclaim us as husband and wife, I woke up sweating.

Now at the marrying age, all I do is to use the available time practicing to be more patient and responsible while I am still single. I don’t just desire someone to like me at first sight because I am fully aware how marriage must go. I want to be a godly wife and to have children to rear in the fear of God, and I am unable to do this with an unbeliever. I will know whom to marry when the Lord tells me so, and it is not definitely through any of my dreams at night!
