battling poverty

In the absence of internet connection over the holidays, the television shows filled in my idleness at home. The successive documentary programs exposed what we Filipinos try to battle everyday ─ poverty.

Poor man’s sports. In trade of no less than five-digit cash prize, many engage themselves in boxing. This, being the human version of cockfighting, highly involves all kinds of injury for both boxers. Much more records of misfortune plastered the many from-rugs-to-riches-stories of boxing champions. Statistics of those who got severe physical damage rising from blood clots, getting blind, paralysis, and the worst, death, is numberless from the time this game was legalized. Despite the peril, this poor man’s sports still gives the boxers better hopes to bring home instant remedy to poverty.

Kidneys for sale. I agonized terribly over the stories of internal organ business otherwise known as “kidney donation” present at the two prime medical institutes in the country. Ranging from 70,000 to 100,000 bucks, a deal is closed guaranteeing ─ like any other commodity in the local market ─ a healthy kidney to the recipient. Medically assured to live normal life even with one kidney taken out and with a lure of money involved, selling of kidneys became so rampant in some remote areas in the city. If helping a neighbor in need is awesome, when is putting life at risk to save someone no longer a good deed?

We hear politicians promising good life during electoral campaigns. I wonder if the issues reach them or when heard, it’s still a puzzle if they find time to resolve those. Poverty is a social sickness curable with shared responsibilities ─ proper action and personal contribution.

Sometimes when I had a chance to watch the documentary in television I felt really sorry for them and left teary eyed. Such an eye opener to what really life is all about.

Yes, truer than it is in real life.

Thanks Julia!
