Ilocos Chronicles: Pagudpod's Famous Bridge & Cave

The prime reason why I opted to be on vacation rather than see one friend off and say farewell was that I entrusted to God the happiness I badly needed that time. I know life requires people to come, stay for some time and go eventually. But no matter how open-minded you are, chances are sadness will consume your heart when the time of parting comes. Days prior to this trip were just so pressing, I barely could figure out why I was feeling so down and immobile. I wanted to take some rest and reward myself with what nature could offer ─ new discoveries, new friends, new getaways… and so, I was here… roaming around Ilocos.

After burning our skin at Saud Beach and after the short but tiring hike off to the freezing cold Kabisan Falls, our next destination was Patapat Viaduct. I have no much expectation, honestly, because I wondered what would make this bridge any different from other more prominent viaducts I’ve seen like San Francisco Bridge and all those hanging bridges in the southern islands.

─ fourth longest bridge in the country, for the record ─

On our stopover there, the answers kept popping one by one in my mind. Not only that this infrastructure was beautiful in itself. The one kilometer long and winding channel connecting Maharlika Highway from Laoag to Cagayan Valley Region, promotes a perfect picturesque of forested highlands facing the sparkling seawater of the north. It’s glory shines even more when seen personally than in photos. Still we took gazillion of pictures for souvenir and for WOWtrippers travel portfolio.

We enjoyed much the endless jump shots until one of our mates’ board shorts was accidentally ripped. At the count of three, when everyone was supposed to jump as candidly as possible, one remarkable sound caught our attention. We looked at each other point blank and sooner realized that one from us just earned a slit on his apparel. There was a minute of silence and after that, followed irresistible and priceless laughter! I felt sorry in a way for him because, of course, somehow it’s embarrassing. We’re all overwhelmed then, including him. The fun it brought us was monumental, believe me!

A closer look: The middle portion of the trouser was brutally torn asunder by a forceful jump.

Because one of us was “injured,” the photo shoots following that event required lesser effort. They lied down comfortably at the middle road and posed. As I observed the scenery from the edge of the bridge, I felt the breeze along the shore of Pasaleng Bay.

Nature was again telling me how creative the Lord is. What my eyes could see was more than perfect!

We left the place a little drenched because of the rain showers that afternoon. Our next stop was Bantay Abot Cave. Once I saw pictures of some friends (who also visited Ilocos last year) taken on a rocky silhouette, but I was clueless that that place was actually here. Since they mentioned about “cave,” what came first to my mind was a real enclosed cavern where echoes are all over the place… well it’s not. This equally beautiful coastal hill was dimpled with this hole in the middle after an earthquake struck in the 80’s. Since it’s already late afternoon and the sun was gladly cooperating, we had time to take photos in silhouette ─ very same concept as my friends’.

Smiling silhouettes...when brightness can't simply define the fun!

Although there hit big waves on the hill while we were there, the place was still nice and relaxing. The air was fresh and the scenery across the sea was very much captivating. For a while I wished to have stayed longer, concentrate deep and have at least one post about my vacation written right in this place, but I failed to do so because we were all busy modeling in front of the cameras! When everything was done, all angles were taken and none else was bothering to stay a little longer, the service van took us home.

We were very, very tired but what we got ─ what I experienced, what Pagudpod has offered us ─ was so far beyond everyone’s expectations. I loved the very way God has created this province. My utmost desire to be happy was undeniably served.
