15/20 Challenge: Traveling Healthy

I have always desired to travel and it’s only in 2010 that I was able to take a trip overseas. And that isn’t just an ordinary overseas travel ─ I hit two countries in one go, Malaysia and Singapore. The climax of it was not exploring the grandeur outside the country; it’s when I got sick there. Yes, and it was terrible! Actually, had I did not, it would be odder.

My cousin and I took a mid dawn flight, so we barely had hours of sleep then. We reached Kuala Lumpur so early in the morning and rested a while before our whole day itinerary started. I could feel how my head burst in pain whenever I found some place to lean it on. The sun was so up and the walk was seriously tiring! In Malaysia alone, I was sure to have badly worn out my body. At the break of day, we had to catch the last trip going to Singapore and that counted some four hours again in the middle of the night. After we arrived, we headed straight to the transient of another cousin where we would stay for the next few days. Initial plan was for me to stay only for a day there but because of my health deteriorating gradually soon after we spend the whole day roaming around the city, I needed to extend my stay there for a couple to weeks.

I had hypoglycemia; I burned abnormal count (big count) of sugar while feeding my excitement to travel overseas. It was overwhelming to take that kind of trip away from all the stress in the office so who cares anyway if I don’t take some break, I thought. It didn’t sink in deeper until I finally realized how many days were actually wasted for just lying in bed waiting for my high fever to cave in and my tired body to recover. In short, I had abused my freedom to enjoy independence. I traded my health over that desire to explore the world outside. I should have taken it slow and planned itinerary that would be favorable to my health.

After that experience, I see to it that health won’t be compromised on top of the busy itinerary associated to traveling overseas. Pleasure and physical wellbeing, I believe, can go together.
