One of the most influential writers who made me read a book – with drenched eyes – in one sitting for a day was Elizabeth Elliot, and today the whole earth cries for losing her to dementia. Her passion to minister for the glory of the Lord and her heart, fully devoted to reaching out those who hunger for the gospel, were one for the books.
I remember crying myself to sleep when I first read the dramatic chronicle she made – Through the Gates of Splendor – for her husband, Jim Elliot, who was speared to death in the hands of Quichua Indians at the Auca territories in Equador, 10 months after her only daughter was born. Being fully aware of the trail of blood and the succession of strain of Christianity dating to apostolic times, and of how cruelly Christ’s followers were slain, this couple’s testimony pierced through my heart on every page of the books sitting on my shelves: Passion and Purity, Let Me Be a Woman, Keep a Quiet Heart, Secure in the Everlasting Arms.
Praise God for turning this grieving to a wonderful gain for her, where she can think and talk once again. Thank you Ms. Elizabeth Elliot for modeling for me the kind of faith that comes in believing, trusting and obeying God's word, for living a Christ-like life, for never walking away from the faith in your darkest days and for finding a woman in you worthy to emulate.
See you in the resurrection morning!
