The night following my birthday in
2016 was full of emotion. Stuart and I got engaged. Soon after, even with the
huge distance between us, we started planning for our wedding. We would talk
for hours in Skype (We really thank God for the internet granting people free
overseas calls!) about our entourage, preferred date and venue, guest list,
souvenirs, and all the littlest wedding details we could think of.
While doing my own research and giving this Pinterest addiction a go, I chanced upon an author who mentioned about staying sane and present on one’s wedding day. How true it is that this special occasion can just go by in a flash without us even realizing it!
So the challenge is to choose those moments throughout our day when we’re both present – just a few remarkable ones when we’re not thinking of what just happened or thinking ahead toward the next thing. Those moments when we’re really, really present, taking in the sights, scents, sounds, and emotions of “the now.”

So much of our wedding day is a blur
when I look back at it; and yet, because of that piece of learning, there were
three moments during our ceremony in particular when confidently I can say, I was extremely
present. And as we celebrated our first of many anniversaries, I recalled those moments in vivid detail, as though they just occurred yesterday.
Just like a time machine, they transported me right back to that
day… with our favorite people and with the most handsome man standing next to
me, holding my shaky hand.
Present Moment #1
Walking Down the Aisle
Because Stuart and I both believe that our wedding ceremony
would be our first shared worship service for the Lord as a married couple,
choosing to load our program with Christian wedding songs meant a lot to us.
And I know from a long time ago that I wanted to sing my praise to God on our
wedding day. As we complete our wedding playlist, I thought of keeping my
bridal march song a surprise for him. It was challenging! He was even present
on one of the singers’ rehearsals but the rest of the team managed everything
without giving him a single clue.
After months of prayers and research, I finally found a song
that perfectly described our love story. More than all the warm and fuzzy
feelings, our growing affection for one another, love and support from our
family and friends, there is a faithful God who has chosen us for each other.

As
I tried to gracefully stride towards Stuart at the altar that day and started singing,
“He Has Chosen Me for You,” he just broke into tears! I knew I couldn’t hold
myself together if I kept staring at him, so instead I looked at the smiling
faces of our guests as I moved some more steps forward.
I sang as though God was there waiting for the both of us at the altar,
lovingly blessing our union. It was surreal to imagine that in just a
matter of minutes, we would finally be married. My heart was just bursting in
gladness and praise to God for all He has done.
