Two weeks earlier, Meilin, my friend and classmate from high school all the way to college, invited me to join in celebrating her 30th birthday at White Cross Children’s Home. I instantly said yes because aside from the fact that I wanted to be present on the most special event in her life, I knew it would be another story spending the day with these homeless children.
Prior to that day, I have solicited financial assistance from my colleagues and gratefully got something to add to our budget for the kids. After a gluttonous lunch at the Orchard Road (this place is really worth going back to, by the way), we went shopping for assorted toiletries, kitchen condiments, canned goods, noodles and of course, medicines. Not too long after our grocery errands, we finally reached the place!
Each child aging 3-11 years old is filled with gladness while seriously concentrating on his Jollibee shanghai meal. The thought of seeing someone visiting them did curve the excitement in their faces. We were kissed, hugged and even begged not to leave yet. The event itself was a real drama. I nearly forgot it’s my friend’s birthday and so before everything else falls as history, I asked the kids if they knew how to sing Happy Birthday. Since everyone raised his hand and answered yes, I led singing Meilin her birthday song. They were very grateful and it did was a rewarding accomplishment. I regretted not being able to share Bible stories to the kids. Anyway, I can go back again and bring my sisters and parents at another date so we can prepare.
To those who have a kind heart and a glowing passion to share your blessings to these children, you can post donation to White Cross Children’s Home with the following contact details:
