Another friend, mother of a close churchmate, died of fatal heart attack at age 65. We rushed to the funeral right after our Sunday worship service to bring comfort to the bereaved family. The relatives have yet to arrive when we reached the funeral chapel so after a few embraces to console our friends, I stayed outside the room and keenly observed the surroundings.
In the middle of a very quiet atmosphere, we heard a striking conversation among youngsters. The departed’s youngest granddaughter came near her other young cousins who just arrived at the place. I heard countless sobs and barely could understand their talk. It was my Mom who relayed the details to us after we left the funeral service.
Here’s the monologue of this little child:
“Hey, I was told by them that grandmother is no longer going home. She will forever stay in that box and won’t be able to play with us again. You better cry now also!”
A humble smile emerged on my face. No matter how awful losing someone so special is, this child’s very naïve and sincere statement brought joy to my heart. Perhaps that’s how she loves her grandmother. Even if she doesn’t totally understand what death is all about, she cries for the mere thought of missing the person. At a very young age, she’s able to identify with this heartbreaking truth.
Our deepest condolences to the Olaguer family.
Your mom will be painfully missed.

I am smiling at this child crying over the loss of her granny. I remember my mother passing away at age 81. One of her grand daughters, the daughter of my brother next to me. My niece cried too hard when my mother was about to be lowered to where her body should rest. My niece is a tough girl. She is the brat of our family. My mother stayed with them at her old age. The words were left unsaid. Yet, the whole family members knew... my niece loves my mother.
My condolences to the family and loved ones of the granny who finally joined the Creator at age 65.
This little girl cheered up everyone in the funeral. Despite the cryings and all, seeing her wail in total innocence gave us this notion of how loved her grandmom is.
